And the special effects are actually impressive here, whether they be in the spooky sets or in the incredibly four-armed monster Goro, who is a masterpiece of design and doesn't look too cheesy either. All of your favourite characters from the game are there with their special moves so expect to see lots of souls being extracted, snakes emerging from hands, people shattering etc.

Still, what this film does have in its favour are a series of bone-crunching fight scenes which are all staged with relish and are all fairly exciting thanks to some quick editing and a thumping techno soundtrack. As I mentioned earlier, the plot is a ludicrous excuse for lots of fight scenes in all manner of places, and the characters have an annoying habit of mugging into the camera while uttering catch-phrases from the arcade game ("Fatality!", etc.).

At least Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa is relatively good (at least compared to the other "performers" here) as the evil sneering villain whose name I won't even try to type out.

Linden Ashby, who tried very hard to emulate Bruce Willis in BLAST, plays an incredibly annoying movie star-cum-martial arts fighter, not too obviously modelled on a certain Mr. Robin Shou tries very hard to emulate Bruce Lee but has all the emoting skill of a brick. His role is of the wise teacher but his ridiculously gruff voice just makes him sound like he's suffering from a particularly nasty sore throat. Okay, so the acting from the three male leads is atrocious, but what do you expect when you're talking about Christopher Lambert? Lambert is even less able to be taken seriously here when wearing a white wig and with a "twinkle" in his eye. The film still suffers from the translation - what was simply a game consisting of a series of brutal fights at the arcade now has to have a plot as well - it has lots of things in its favour, including mostly neat special effects and lots of gratuitous violence (but not gore). Reviewed by Leofwine_draca 5 / 10 Fun fights, that's about itĪs far as adaptations of video games go, this beats STREET FIGHTER hands down but it is still somewhat lacking in the basic film necessities department. (Can't rely on this link - /trailer/mortal-kombat-rebirth/short-film, because by the time you read/click this, it might have vanished.) Can they possibly redeem themselves? Side Note: I only re-watched this movie due to the recent fantastic short based on some kind of Mortal Kombat remake available online. It might still be but that's not saying much as every single video-game-turned-big-screen sucked.

Please, could you include a few more topless action-figure male-extras in the sequel? This used to be my number one video-game adapted movie. And good for me, but bad for the target audience The movie is as homoerotic as 300. If the good guys win, well, there'll be a sequel (unfortunately, and spoiler, there was one.) The editing is shotty – scenes just begin and end without ease. Apparently, there's this, uh, tournament with the movie's title and if the bad guys win, the world ends. God, I don't even want to waste any more time in giving the so-called plot, but I'm obligated. I give it something it probably doesn't deserve. So, then, why did I award this piece of trash 1½ star out of five possible? Well, I was fooled into liking this movie when I was young, and I absolutely loved the soundtrack. Experience the lazily choreographed scenes that a Junior High production's worst rehearsal would top. Watch the Super-Nintendo graphics explode. Listen to what they're saying without cracking up. Really, there's no way around thinking this sick excuse of a franchise isn't bad.

I guess I can be so harsh because prior to this viewing, my first in probably ten plus years, this was not only my favorite video-game-adaptation, but ranked high on my action favorites. I had to get most of my disgusted feelings out so I can move on with more criticism on 1995's Mortal Kombat. Furthermore, I have yet to see The Last Airbender, but I can imagine this 15-year-old movie mirrors M. And worst of all – it's a comedy but doesn't know it I laughed so hard during this movie it was as if this was directed by M.
